October/November 2004

Letter from the Executive Director

Grant W. Newton, CIRA, CMA, CPA, Ph.D.,
Professor of Accounting, Pepperdine University

Forty individuals registered for the first two sessions of Part 1 of the Certification in Distressed Business Valuation (CDBV) course. Part 1 covers advanced business valuation issues. Individuals that have prior business valuation certifications are not required to take Part 1. Part 2 dealing with application of business valuation concepts to bankruptcy and other distressed situations is scheduled for Malibu (2 dates), New York and Chicago within the next year. Other sessions of Part 1 are schedule for Malibu and Chicago. CDBV is the only business certification program available that focuses on distressed business valuation.

As of July, AIRA moved all of its courses taught in the Los Angeles area (both CIRA and CDBV) to the newly opened executive center on Pepperdine’s campus in Malibu. All courses that will be offered in 2005 are also scheduled at the Graziadio Executive Center which has private rooms at the rate of $159 per night. Locate in the Executive Center are 50 luxurious rooms with ocean or mountain view, Queen-size beds, Starbucks Coffee; 27” Panasonic flat screen television, Dedicated work space with Ethernet and wireless capabilities, and state of the art fitness center.

During AIRA fiscal year ending September 30, 2004, over 262 individuals registered for a CIRA course for the first time. This compares to 265 that registered for a CIRA course for the first time in FY 2003. During FY 2004, 111 CIRA certificates were issued; 108 certificates issued in FY 2003. A total of 692 Certificates have been issued as of October 1, 2004. An additional 292 individuals have passed all three parts of the examination and are in the process of filing or completing the experience requirement. An additional 637 individuals that have registered for the CIRA program have one or more parts to complete. CIRA courses for 2005 will be offered in Miami, New York, Boston, Chicago and Malibu (Los Angeles).

Both CIRA and CDBV course are available as in-house courses. Generally, it is profitable for a firm to offer internally CIRA or CDBV courses if between 15 and 20 individuals (depending on the extent to which individuals must travel) from the same firm desire to take the course. Several firms are currently offering in-house courses.
